BucketsHouse

The Bucket House as seen on Keeping Up Appearances

The Bucket House, commonly called "The Bucket Residence" by Hyacinth when speaking on the phone, is the home of Hyacinth Bucket, Richard Bucket, and Sheridan Bucket. It serves as one of the most common settings for the series Keeping Up Appearances.

The home is indeed a product of Hyacinth's snobishness; she keeps the home in immaculate condition, prominently displays collectible items, and frequently hosts candlelight suppers as an effort to show off her home and lifestyle. Hyacinth is fiercely protective and caring of the home and her possessions because she wants to keep it in pristine condition.

Function, Layout, and Appearance

The Bucket house is located in a suburban neighbourhood in Britain. The Bucket residence is located one house to the left of Elizabeth's home. Due to the fact that they are neighbours, there are a lot of humourous interactions between the Bucket family and Elizabeth and Emmet, often involving the latter two avoiding the Buckets at great lengths. The home is a single storey house with an attached garage and is surrounded by a fence.

The house is decorated in a very ornate way. Hyacinth keeps many of her prized decorations and possessions in her home and displays them prominently. The home features China Cabinets decorated with dishes, glassware, and knickknacks and small statues on side tables. Hyacinth meticulously cares for her wooden floors, as she often requires house guests and workers to remove their shoes either outside the home or within the entryway. She even had a special treatment applied to her floors, which consequently required her to request that The Vicar removes his shoes, even to the surprise of neighbour Elizabeth. Hyacinth is very stringent with her colour scheme, often times coordinating furniture with her walls and even exactly matched her bedroom sheets with the wallpaper. In Hyacinth Is Alarmed, she even insisted that an intruder alarm utility box be painted a specific colour to ensure perfect appearance.

Similar to the rest of the house, the kitchen is well decorated. The kitchen is located near the rear of the house. The counters are kept clean, clutter-free, and is lined with a plant and pottery. Hyacinth usually spends a considerable amount of time in the kitchen and can frequently be seen wiping down counters and washing dishes. This is where she hosts tea with Elizabeth. Hyacinth's overbearing personality causes Elizabeth to become quite nervous, resulting in her infamous tea spills, much to the frustration of Hyacinth.

The entryway is long and stretches from the front door to the kitchen. This room has access to rooms on either side and is the location of Hyacinth's famous phone calls on her White Slimline Telephone. Common callers include Violet, Daisy, Rose, Sheridan, and customers attempting to call the Green Lotus Chinese Takeaway. The telephone is set on a shelf along with figurines and other decorations. Hyacinth often wipes down the phone, its cord, and other nearby objects with a cloth when speaking on the phone.
